With the passage of the contract for city-wide Residential Refuse and Recycling services, we thought it would be helpful to distribute some Frequently Asked Questions… Area Disposal will be reaching out very soon to each and every residence with information regarding the program. In the meantime, here are a few helpful items of note:
When will this new program start? The new program will begin the week of April 30, 2018 (May 3, 2018 to be exact – as pickup will be on Thursday of every week)
How will I get my totes and what kind will they be? Each residence will be provided a 96-gal refuse tote and a 96-gal recycling tote for your use. If you wish to have a smaller tote, you can make those arrangements with Area. If you need to have more than 1 tote, you can rent an extra one for $2.50/month
How often will they pick up garbage and recycling? Refuse (garbage) will be picked up every week on Thursday. Recycling will be picked up every other week on Thursday as well.
What is this going to cost me? For May 1, 2018 through April 30, 2019, the monthly cost will be $14.75. There are no additional taxes or fees. There will be a new line item on your utility bill – you will not pay Area Disposal directly for the monthly service.
What if I’m late paying my utility bill? Any finance charges for a late utility bill will be assessed against electric, water and sewer usage only; as is current practice.
What if I’m a senior citizen? We will be providing a form to qualify you for the 10% discount when you initially sign up.
What about yard waste? 2 weeks in the spring and 2 weeks in the fall (depending on weather), they will provide weekly yard waste/leaf pickup as long as its placed in biodegradable kraft lawn bags or waterproof plastic/metal containers. Brush pickup will continue the rest of the year on the last Wednesday of the month as is current practice. There is no change to the current burning ordinance, which is allowed Thursday, Friday and Saturday only and not in the street.
What if I have a complaint, such as them spilling garbage or forgetting to pick it up from my house, on pickup day? Area Disposal will be required to have a customer service number to address any concerns or questions. Our contract requires them to keep us up to date on complaints and how they are addressed. The City will also have a direct line with a municipal representative to address concerns and emergencies.
If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact City Hall at (309) 928-3412.
