Position Description
LINEMAN
Reports to: Electric Superintendent
Positions supervised: none
Position Description Overview
This position, under general supervision of the Electric Superintendent, is responsible for installing components and performing tasks in the construction and maintenance of an electric utility system. This position is skilled journeyman level work.
Essential Job Functions
- Install, repair, maintain, and test overhead electric lines.
- Install and repair underground cables and test electric utility cables and install fiber optic cables.
- Repair other component parts of the electric utility system.
- Operate and maintain equipment and tools of the trade used in electric utility construction and maintenance work.
- Assist in the training of apprentice linemen.
- Take personal responsibility to provide exceptional customer service in order to promote and maintain a positive City image, constructive working environment, and foster pride and professionalism in the work place and community.
- Adhere to all departmental and City safety policies.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality is required
Additional Job functions
- Assist other City departments in the abatement of emergency situations
- Ability to locate all underground utilities
- Perform other duties as required or assigned
Basic Requirements
For successful performance in this position, the incumbent will need to demonstrate the following:
- Extensive knowledge of work methods and practices related to the maintenance and construction of an electric utility system
- Extensive knowledge of all safety procedures and precautions.
- Extensive knowledge in the use of equipment and tools used in electric utility systems.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills for interaction with elected appointed officials, coworkers, agencies and other governmental units, and the public.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and prepare written records and reports.
- Ability and willingness to respond to emergency calls twenty four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, carry a wireless communication device, and participate in a standby rotation.
- Ability to maintain primary residency within the boundaries of the City within 6 months of employment.
- Possession of a valid CDL class driver’s license (B or A) with appropriate endorsements (air brakes), or receipt of one within 6 months of commencing employment.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent, electric related courses helpful.
- Minimum of four (4) years electricity or construction experience preferred.
- Successful completion of an approved journeyman lineman apprenticeship program
- Any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Physical/ Environmental Demands
- Ability to perform difficult and hazardous assignments under difficult and arduous conditions.
- Ability to work under varying environmental conditions both indoors and outdoors, which may include dust, dirt, fumes, low illumination, poor visibility, noise, etc.
- Ability to perform manual labor under a variety of conditions, which may require walking, climbing, crawling, bending, kneeling, stepping, stooping, standing, and/or sitting for extended periods of time.
- Ability to move, remove, and replace heavy objects and use heavy tools and / or equipment weighing up to 75 lbs., such as utility hole covers, pumps, motors, etc.
- Ability to climb a utility pole to a minimum of fifty (50) feet, and perform duties while attached to the pole
- Ability to hear ordinary conversations, such as questions from residents, as well as other sounds, including back-up alarm on trucks and other equipment, radio dispatched calls and/or signals, and calls for help from co-worker, etc.
